Getting Started in the Music Business

Begin by taking personal inventory of your gift and how skilled you are in it. Once you decide that you are seasoned enough in your craft, you’re ready to move on. Record a demo of not more than 3 of your best songs. “Be Yourself” allow the essence of you to come through your recording. Remember to put your best song first, and don’t try to sound like anyone else. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to produce a great sound. Ask singers and or musicians you already know to accompany you, this will help to keep your expenses low. Remember James 4:2 says: “Ye have not, because ye ask not.”

Next you must assemble your very own “Dream Team”, (Remember that before Jesus began His ministry he gathered His own team- The “disciples”). As one Church mother used to say “One fella can’t do it all.” If you are truly gifted and anointed God has already surrounded you with people who can and will help you to get to the next level.

Personal Manager- their duties include promotions, creating your image, bookings, finding a recording studio, producers, background vocals, musicians, help with negotiations of a Recording Contract etc.

You’re probably thinking, “how in the world can you afford a personal manager? Well if you’re just getting started, you can’t. But, all is not lost. If you have someone (even without music biz experience) who believes in you, supports you and is willing to do whatever it takes to help you achieve your dreams, they have the potential to be the best personal manager anyone could have. “Little is much when God is in it”

Business Manager- They take care of your finances, they pay the bills, your taxes, invest your money. This person will control much of your future, so they must be trustworthy. (It’s best not to place a relative in this position, especially if you want to stay on good terms with them). Prayer is the key to every decision that you make. Try not to make decisions based on obligation, guilt, or “a feeling.” If you ask God to guide you, He will give you His wisdom.

Lawyer- (with music business clout or experience) they are invaluable to your music career, not just because of their legal expertise. But also because they aren’t typically bogged down with all the responsibilities your managers have; so they can focus on getting your CD listened to. In most cases record companies won’t even listen to a CD unless, it’s given to them by someone they rub shoulders with. The fact is that even in the Christian music business, “who you know,” does matter. Isn’t it nice though that you know the King of Kings, how’s that for name-dropping?

Finally, Keep in mind that you must ask for references especially for both the Business manager and the lawyer. Don’t just get a list, follow up, call these people, and ask them questions, before you make any decisions. Be prepared for the long haul. Pay attention to every experience you have, good or bad, there’s a valuable lesson to be learned. Don’t ever stop developing your musical abilities, push yourself to Never loose sight of God, who is your source.
