Joshua stood
before the Promised Land, on the threshold of a new
beginning as God exhorted him with these words:
‘There
shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the
days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be
with thee. I will not fail thee or forsake thee. Be
strong and of good courage: for unto this people shall
thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware
unto their fathers to give them.” Joshua
1:5-6
The ancient
land of Canaan, the Promised Land, was filled with people
who embraced lawlessness, brutality, unnatural sexuality,
serpent worship, child sacrifice and a host of other
ungodly: ideas, laws and modes of living. The similarities
to our present world are unsettling, but God knew that
the victory He had promised and purposed for His chosen
people was within their grasp so He exhorts Joshua to
“be strong and of good courage.” It’s
so easy just to accept what appears to be our present
reality…sometimes the issues we face as Godly
people in an ungodly world seem to be overwhelmingly
unbeatable. The devil, who is a promoter of lies, would
be happy if he could convince God’s children that
victory was in his hands and not theirs.
We find in
Joshua, a God directed leader, leading his people to
victory to take back the land, creating a godly place
where their children and their children’s children
could grow and flourish in God. What looked like a land
of godlessness and hopelessness was really a land of
milk and honey.
As the people
of God valiantly go forward to take the land God promised
they experience victory as they follow God’s battle
plan. The key to moving from the wilderness to rulers
of the land God had promised has a lot to do with Joshua’s
ability to hear from God. Victory was often achieved
in unusual ways. The Battle at Jericho for example was
won as the people marched obediently around the city
for 6 days, then on the 7th day as the priest blew their
trumpets and the people shouted…the walls of Jericho
fell. Joshua could not have developed this battle plan
out of his own mind but he knew that victory could not
be achieved without God’s direction and help:
“And
the Lord said unto Joshua, See, I have given into thine
hand Jericho and the king thereof, and the mightily
men of valour. And ye shall compass the city, all ye
men of war and go round about the city once. Thus you
shall do six days. And seven priests shall bear before
the ark seven trumpets of ram’s horns: and the
seventh day ye shall compass the city seven times, and
the priest shall blow with the trumpets. And it shall
come to pass, that when they make the long blast with
the rams horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet,
all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the
wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people
shall ascend up every man straight before him.”
Joshua 6: 2-5
Joshua heard
from God – then he acted. He wasn’t afraid
to do the things that God gave him to do even through
they may have been unconventional. God will often test
and try us giving us solutions that seem illogical,
but God’s solutions provide much blessing.
Victory for
you as a Godly man may lie in learning how to worship
God or how to hear His voice. If you are not in the
right position to do this or you are just growing in
the lord you may need to spend more time in the word
and in prayer. We have also provided links to other
articles on our web site (please see below) to encourage
and instruct you.
Man
Of God – the promised land is before you, so be
strong and of good courage - you can take the land back
for God and experience victory after victory as you
discover God’s battle plan. His strategies are
unbeatable.
